Technology, Literacy and Coaching Showcase
With the amount of technology involved in our lives growing at an exponential rate, it seemed appropriate for me to choose technology as the main focus of my masters program. The biggest draw of the Master's of Arts in Education (MAED) program was that it allowed me to select a focus area, but also to take courses in other areas that interest me such as literacy and coaching. The following websites and documents are a sample of my work that reflect those areas. Click the picture to access the various artifacts.
Technology
Algebra Online Resource Library
As a teacher, there are tons of free resources out there that can enhance student learning, but it can be somewhat time consuming to search for a good resource that fits in with a particular lesson. For the final project in my CEP 805 course, I created a website that teachers can visit to access various types of Algebra 1 resources. There are evaluations of the resources and it is sorted by subject area to help make the search easier.
Exponential Functions Online Unit
This short unit was created to introduce students in Algebra 1 to exponential functions as part of my CEP 820 course. It consists of various forms of instruction including videos, discussions, downloadable assignments and is capped off with a group project.
Developer's Notebook
To accompany the online unit, for CEP 820 I also created my Developer's Notebook. This served as a place for me to reflect on various readings while also self-evaluating the unit that I was simultaneously creating.
Instructional Dream
To synthesize the information learned from CEP 816, I used readings, videos and other ideas from the course to create an 'Instructional Dream.' Due to the nature of the project, the writing is a narrative of the 'journey' that I took to create my dream and is much more informal than my other writings.
Literacy
Literacy Case Study
As part of TE 846, I carried out a case study using two students based on the importance of vocabulary in mathematics classes. I designed lessons for two 7th grade students in an effort to teach them strategies they could use when faced with unfamiliar mathematics vocabulary.
Research Project
During my internship year of teaching, a group of colleagues and I performed an study of students' perceptions of congruence. For TE 802, we carried out a research project that investigated students' perceptions about congruence over multiple grade levels at different schools.
Inquiry Essay
During ED 800, I used readings and videos to investigate different forms of inquiry. The piece that had the biggest impact came after reading The Girl with the Brown Crayon by Vivian Paley. This is an essay served as a reflection of the way that my thinking changed as a result of the reading.
Coaching
Coaching Philosophy
When it comes to coaching, having a clear and consistent coaching philosophy is important to guiding each decision made by everyone involved in the program. For the final project of KIN 855, I synthesized the many different things that I learned into one encompassing philosophy.
Coaching Case Study
For part of KIN 855, I also worked on multiple case studies with three other masters students from across the country. For this particular case study, I served as the group leader. We used readings and prior experiences to create a solution to the problem of having coaches with different philosophies.
